Farmers in Bullas worry about Xylella fastidiosa (29/11/2017)

Numerous farmers of Bullas attended yesterday the talk organized by the Union of Small Farmers and Cattle Ranchers (UPA) of the Region of Murcia and the Department of Agriculture of the City of Bullas on the Xylella fastidiosa.

This is a phytopathogenic bacterium, with great potential for economic damage, since it attacks without cure at present several plants such as the vine, the olive tree, the almond tree, the plum tree, the peach tree, the lemon tree, among others.

The presentation was directed by Telesforo García, Head of Plant Health Service who shared a table with the Mayor, María Dolores Muñoz, and Antonio Moreno of UPA.

In this talk it was clarified that it is not intended to alarm farmers, but we must be cautious and avoid as far as possible that this bacterium that has affected crops in the Balearic Islands and Alicante within the Spanish term reaches our area because effects are very harmful.

The Xylella is transmitted by insects and by grafts from affected plants, so it is important to transplant only plants that are certified and comply with European regulations.
