Are blood products tested for the COVID-19 virus in blood centers?

No. Although fragments of the SARS-CoV-2 RNA (the COVID-19 virus) have been detected in the blood of patients with symptoms of the disease, it does not mean that the virus is viable / infectious.

In general, viruses that cause respiratory illness are not transmitted by blood transfusions.

Blood centers should implement screening procedures for blood donors to prevent people with respiratory symptoms or fever from donating blood.

As a precautionary measure, blood centers may promote self-exclusion of people who have traveled to a country affected by COVID-19 in the 14 days prior to donation, people diagnosed with the disease, or people who have been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

Should health care professionals caring for patients with suspected or confirmed 2019-nCoV infection be routinely put on boots, waterproof aprons, or overalls as personal protective equipment (PPE)?

No. The current WHO guidelines for healthcare personnel caring for patients with suspected or confirmed acute respiratory disease by 2019-nCoV recommend the use of precautions against contact and droplet transmission, in addition to the usual precautions. that all health care personnel should always take for all patients.

Concerning PPE, precautions against contact and droplet transmission include the following: wear disposable gloves to protect hands, clean, non-sterile gowns to avoid contaminating clothing, masks for medical use to protect nose and mouth, and eye protection (for example, glasses or face shield), before entering the admission room of patients with suspected or confirmed acute respiratory infection by 2019-nCoV.

Only respiratory masks (eg N95) are required for procedures that generate aerosols.
