This morning the Plaza de España has welcomed the tribute to all women victims of gender violence on the International Day for the Elimination of Gender Violence. On the occasion of the commemoration of November 25, the Councilor for Equality and Women, Carmen Abellán, has read a manifesto reiterating the Consistory's commitment to the fight against violence against women. At a historic moment in which efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 require containment measures that have put and continue to endanger women and their children, and increase the power and control of those who they make homes unsafe.
For this reason, the Councilor for Equality has stated that "it is urgent to combine measures that seek to slow down the spread of the virus and the response capacity of the health system with the eradication of behaviors that reproduce and perpetuate inequality and with the protection of those who suffer its consequences. So far this year there are 41 women victims of this social scourge and in tribute to them their names have been read before a stage of forty-one empty chairs that drew the symbol of the woman and in the middle candles lit with the color purple symbol of the fight against violence against women. "In the face of atrocities we have to take sides, silence stimulates the executioner", said Abellán, who ended with "enough is enough." In addition to this action, the City Council will launch from today an audiovisual campaign to give visibility and raise awareness about sexist violence.
Similarly, the shops of Bullas have been involved by decorating shop windows and wearing purple masks that will also be distributed among the residents of Bullas.
