Course of Archeology in the Roman Villa of Los Cantos (04/08/2017)

The Roman Site of Los Cantos will for the first time be the site of an International Field Archeology Course in which students from different backgrounds will participate directly in the Archaeological Excavation Campaign organized for this purpose.

The course is promoted by the University of Murcia and the City of Bullas, and will give the registered participants the opportunity to study first hand a model of Roman settlement of the rural type known as Villa.

The Villa of Los Cantos is a large agricultural estate of Roman times that had its period of full activity between the first and fourth centuries AD It was located in an area of great economic interest for the Spanish-Roman aristocracy (wine, oil, grain production ), Of high scenic value and at a crossroads that connected Carthago Nova with the Sierras del Segura and the interior of the peninsula.

The settlement occupies a space of 10,000 m2 and consists of a large building that functions as the residence of the owners of the villa, a thermal complex and the industrial zone dedicated to the manufacture and storage of agricultural and livestock production.

It also had a garden area where in the day were found several sculptures that worked as water dispensers;

Including the Boy of the Grapes and three others who have recently been recovered by agents of the Civil Guard, within the operations of the Plan for the Defense of Spanish Historical Heritage.

Currently, the site is in an early stage of research, but the findings so far have seen a promising future.

Some of its discoveries are really interesting, such as the existence of a viewpoint built into the residential area or the partial discovery of what appears to be a double-baked thermal complex, not to mention the presence of one of the few preserved examples of access doors To the village.

Of particular relevance for Bullas are the findings linked to wine production, with remains found of a possible winery, in addition to the aforementioned finding of the well-known Child of the Grapes.

The Archeology Course, which will be held from the 6th to the 20th of August, deals with integral training in fundamental aspects such as excavation techniques, stratigraphy, photogrammetry, topography, field drawing, inventory of materials, etc.

Parallel to the Course, volunteers will also be able to participate in the Excavation Campaign of Los Cantos, an initiative aimed at anyone interested in the world of archeology and in the historical past of our Region.

The excavations and the Course are driven by the Bullas Town Hall, through the Wine Museum, and the Center for Studies of the Near East and Late Antiquity of the University of Murcia, and are sponsored by the Association Wine Route Of Bullas and the Cajamurcia Foundation.
