The Civil Guard seizes 25 specimens of exotic animals offered for sale in Bullas (13/03/2015)

Birds and reptiles were in captivity and lacked the required documents proving their legal tenure

The Guardia Civil has enjoyed the cooperation of citizens and the local police in Bullas

The Civil Guard in the region of Murcia, has developed the operation 'PORCUPINE', an investigation to clarify the origin, ownership and sale of exotic animals, via the Internet, which has resulted in the seizure in Bullas, 25 specimens of birds and exotic reptiles, without the necessary documentation.

The operation was initiated following a complaint by an individual in which came to the knowledge of the Meritorious allegedly selling exotic animals illegally obtained through an Internet portal.

With this information, specialists of Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil in collaboration with the local police Bullas, initiated the necessary inquiries to verify that it was holding and illegal sale of protected specimens regulated in the International Convention in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

After obtaining the necessary evidence, the SEPRONA has inspected a shop selling animals and enabled as voladero and poultry in Bullas enclosure, where they have been found 25 protected specimens that lacked the required CITES documents that have been seized.

It is exotic birds and reptiles among which the porcupine (Hystrix cristata), Iacchus African (Psittacus Erithacus), Lorito Senegalese (Poicephalus senegalus) and reptiles Varano de Sabana (Savannah monitor albigularis) type and Dragon Chinese Water ( physignathus Cocincinus), among others, that have been made available to the Customs and Excise Murcia.

The operation 'PORCUPINE' has also completed the processing of fifteen complaints for violation of the Act Contraband, those responsible for the establishment of animal sales and exhibition where, besides keeping animals without food conditions and timely weather, performed the breeding of them.

The authors of such facts may incur a smuggling offense (punishable under the existing Criminal Code) or in the commission of administrative offense of smuggling, for this sanctions ranging from less than 1,000 euros for establishing classified as mild 1,000 to 12,000 euros for serious and exceeding 12,000 euros and 50,000 euros less than in the case of very serious.

Other action related to the protection of endangered animal species, took place yesterday, day 12, RM-11 highway, town of Lorca, when policemen of Public Safety Unit (USECIC) found in the roadway a thighed tortoise 'testudo graeca'.

This animal, listed as vulnerable specimen in Royal Decree 139/2011 on the list of wildlife species in special protection regime, whose marketing is prohibited, was picked up by the policemen in order to prevent possible abuse by vehicles traveling on the road and delivered at the Center for Recovery of Wild Species of Murcia.
