The Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment in Bullas promote the implementation of pilot projects separate collection of bio-waste, following the request of the municipality, said today by the Director General of Quality and Environmental Assessment, Molina Encarna after meeting with the mayor, Maria Dolores Muñoz.
Molina said that the Waste Plan of the Region of Murcia (2015-2020) "has included measures to encourage the separate collection of organic matter through the implementation of pilot projects in various municipalities with the objective of assessing the dimensioning and costs which involves the introduction of this new system. "
The director general added that there are other municipalities that are interested in undertaking similar initiatives.
Biowaste are biodegradable garden and park waste, food and kitchen waste from households, restaurants, caterers and establishments of retail;
and comparable waste from food processing plants.
At present this type of waste is collected mixed with other municipal waste containers remaining fraction and subjected to a sorting trying to extract all the organic matter in order to facilitate composting.
According to Molina Encarna, "this system has been widely adopted in the countries of the European Union, but has proved insufficient, since the technical capacity of the facilities for separation has limitations and the resulting organic material produces a poor quality compost for acceptance by the demand for recycled product. "
Separate collection
Therefore, the European Union and the Spanish state are promoting separate organic matter, both domestic consumers and other major producers, through the Waste Act, the waste and contaminated soil and collecting Plan State Waste Framework (MARP).
The Director General stressed that the advantages of separate collection result in "higher quality of the compost obtained, which the acceptability of the product on the market, even for use in municipal parks and gardens increase."
In this regard he added that "produces a direct benefit on the floor because, by having processes more efficient selection, the resulting product does not have in its material composition, for example, small pieces of plastic or glass, which would accumulate in without degrading the land. "
Communities such as Catalonia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country have been implemented this collection system since 2008. Other communities are studying its implementation, as well as local authorities.
In 2012 they reached double tons of biowaste collected since 2006. However there are still doubts about some aspects of its implementation, as increased costs involved, the existence of sufficient demand or adaptation of the collection and sorting facilities.
Other business
At its meeting today, the mayor of Bullas informed the Director General of the conversion in the landfill green space sealed by the Autonomous Community in 2011, and requested assistance to increase the number of areas of contribution of household waste in containers and the conditioning of the municipal ecopark.
